Kabay Pharmacy has been serving customers for over 30 years. With a huge inventory and dedicated, smiling colleagues, we strive to serve everyone who steps into our pharmacy.
Since 1995, our pharmacy has operated as a privatized family business. We are also actively involved in professional training, serving as a prominent teaching pharmacy. Our head pharmacist, Dr. Mód Lászlóné, was once awarded the title of Teaching Pharmacist of the Year.
Since 2012, our head pharmacist Dr. Péter Mód has held the position of president for specialization and state examinations at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Szeged (SZTE GYTK). We are proud to have received the prestigious Pharmacy of the Year award in 2017.
"Social responsibility receives special attention in our daily lives..."
Social responsibility receives special attention in our daily lives, as we regularly support numerous health, university, and other foundations (Hispanistics Foundation, GEMMA, Bátor Tábor, Ecumenical Relief Organization, Foundation for Szeged Pharmacy Education, Kolonics Foundation, Rotary, Lions, 'Little Children Can Be Very Sick' Foundation, Alsóváros Cultural Foundation, 'Together with Little Angels' Foundation, Szeged Hospice, 'Kapaszkodó' Ecumenical Foundation, 'Léleklépő' Foundation). During Covid, we assisted the SZTE Clinical Center with 2 million HUF worth of equipment. We have a great partnership with the Szeged Wildlife Park, actively participating in their adoption program. As dedicated ambassadors of health, sports are an integral part of our lives, and we support talented athletes in our city whenever possible. We continuously monitor the sports scene in Szeged, which gives us the opportunity to provide a solid background for emerging talents.

Who was János Kabay?
The son of József Kabay, a municipal clerk, and Piroska Deák. His maternal uncle, Ferenc Lukács Sr., was a royal Hungarian postmaster, and his grandfather was Ferenc Lukács, a pharmacist. He graduated from the high school in Hajdúnánás and began his higher education at the Budapest University of Technology in 1915 to become a chemical engineer. However, he had to leave the university after half a year when he was drafted into the army. After World War I, he interned at his brother Péter Kabay's pharmacy in Hajdúnánás and enrolled at Pázmány Péter University in Budapest, where he earned his pharmacy degree in 1923 and took his pharmacist oath in 1924.
He then continued his work at the Medicinal Plant Experimental Station, where, alongside his wife, chemist Ilona Kelp, he developed the industrial method for extracting morphine. The green poppy plant was harvested after flowering, and the active ingredient was extracted from the chopped poppy heads through a pressing process. He patented this method in 1925. In 1927, he founded the Alkaloida Chemical Factory in Büdszentmihály, which unfortunately faced financial difficulties. In 1931, Kabay filed a new patent: he succeeded in extracting morphine from dry poppy straw, which had previously been treated as agricultural waste. This economical "dry process" revolutionized morphine production, allowing the pharmaceutical factory to not only meet domestic needs but also export the analgesic drug. The Kabay couple eventually patented their method in ten countries.
János Kabay continued his research to make morphine production even more cost-effective. However, in 1936, he unexpectedly died of blood poisoning following a hernia operation.
